Swimsuit Photography Tips - Lighting and Perfect Timing

Chasing the Sun

The sun plays a central role in nearly all outdoor photography and for a swimsuit photoshoot it can be the single most important element. Early mornings and late afternoons can be the most opportune times for beach or swimsuit photography. For starters, there are usually less people present at this time of day but in addition you will notice that with the sun shining on an angle, it's possible to capture more artistic effects of shadows and colors, especially in the evening - before sunset - when the sun's light turns a warm golden hue.

Working with the sun behind you

This should be your first basic lighting orientation you need to master with the sun behind you and while the swimsuit model faces the sun's direction.

Tips for a Successful Swimsuit Photoshoot - Preparation

1. Organization

For photographers it's rather difficult to achieve publishable results if one is not prepared ahead of time. The key to any great photoshoot begins with organization of your needed gear. This takes on an even more significant role when it comes to swimsuit photography, where the location is home to a billion grains of sand all too eager to wreak havoc on your equipment. For a swimsuit photoshoot or any beach photography for that matter, the best tip is to pre-assemble your equipment, packing light with only the most importance devices you will actually need and trying to sand-proof the instruments with plastic Ziploc-type bags if possible. Also, know the location of your gear. The last thing any photographer wants is to be the one lagging the photoshoot, rummaging through the gear with the models and rest of your team waiting, or risking dropping your lens on the sand.

Swimsuit Photography Tips - the Camera

2. Bring a back-up Camera

Beach swimsuit photography often times involves plentiful amounts of natural sunlight to work with, making your job easier. This enables you to capture amazing photos with less advanced camera equipment than would normally be required for an indoor setting. One of the most important tips for beach photography is to bring spare and backup equipment. Accidents happen more often than most people realize and witnessing the perfect moment yet being unable to capture it on film can be disastrous. You can simply leave the spares in your car/boat unless the beach location is remote, then the best advice is to just take at least a 2nd camera with you.

Choosing the Lens

For swimsuit photography the best lenses are high quality medium telephoto, wide aperture lens, however it depends on your personal preference. DSLR cameras are commonly built with one of two sensors; APS-C and Full Frame varieties. It is important to determine the sensor your camera has in order to be able to choose the appropriate lens to match. Cameras with the smaller APS-C sensor will require a shorter lens to capture the same effect as the Full Frame DSLR.

For cameras with the Full Frame sensor, the lens recommendations are: prime lenses from 100mm to 150mm; zoom lenses covering the 70mm to 200mm spectrum.

For cameras with the APS-C sensor, the lens recommendations are: prime lenses from 50mm to 100mm; zoom lenses covering the 70mm to 200mm range.
